2 Peter 1:3-4 (KJV) According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The divine power of the Lord Jesus Christ is that which enables us to live out all things pertaining to life and Godliness through knowing Him. It is by the partaking of His divine nature (power/energies) that we escape the sinful corruption of the world in it’s lust, and while we do not partake in the essence/substance of God in Jesus Christ we do partake in His divine energies/power/actions. Those energies are the attributes ascribed to God in scripture such as love, goodness, holiness, truth, patience and so on. The early church fathers of the Christian faith write on this distinction (click here) and one may find this distinction in scripture (Exodus 33:18-23, Matthew 17:1-2 comp with 1 Timothy 6:15-16, 1 Corinthians 12:6, 1 John 4:12). We may not see God in His glory (essence/substance), but in the light of His glory (energies/power) we may see Him (2 Corinthians 4:6) through the visible image of Him, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ (John 1:18, Colossians 1:15-16). It is that light or working of God in us that enables us to personally know God.
One may assimilate these divine energies into one’s life by surrendering to the working of Christ in us (John 15:5) and this requires us to put off the sinful passions which draw us from surrender to Christ. Whatever divine energy of God we need the most (due to our weaknesses in life) is the one we should look to. Shut out external distractions, look to God and the energy you require, surrender to it, embrace it and let go of those things in your heart which prevents God from working in you to do His will. This morning when I surrendered to love from God I felt like I was soaking in love and my heart was cleared up of evil inclinations that had tormented me. I had encountered God by His love and this reminded me of how it is that we are to do put off the sinful passions we have. Practically speaking every morning we should seek to pray for God’s energies in our lives and embrace them without hesitation, for the man who hesitates leaves room for sin which can almost inevitably corrupt the rest of the man. If you are reading this, do not forget these things, for in my life and the lives of many others the Devil has sought to leave us feeling helpless. We are not without help, the grace of God through His divine energies is here for us, embrace it and hold onto it with all that you have then you will experience divine transformation into the likeness of Jesus Christ who was without sin, one with the Father (John 10:30).
